My Method Actor
Ninja Tune
Retaining that genre-fluid, hooky indie rock sound that enamoured us from day one, her 3rd record has seen the ever-evolving Londoner make an interesting label move over to Ninja Tune, exposing her robust and ebullient oeuvre to a fresh set of potentially appreciative ears.
There’s a natural continuation of what’s come before through her resumed collaboration with musician, co-writer and producer, Wilma Archer, but there’s a measured departure from her indie-rock roots. Assuredly flitting between distorted grunge, gritty melodies and gossamer jazz-pop on a dime, her carefully crafted evolution makes her output more enrapturing than ever.
The album opens with a trio of killer, chunky tunes (‘Keep On Dancing’, ‘Like I Say (I runaway)’ and ‘My Method Actor’) that bullishly declare the extent of this growth. They are rougher and gnarlier than we might have expected and, as such, instantly attention-grabbing. The rest of the album then unfolds into a more mellow progression of delicate instrumentation, cinematic strings, skittering beats, dreamy textures and pop-soul vocals, all coalescing to keep our cerebral cortex perfectly nourished.
