Coming On Strongerer (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
MOSHI MOSHI
It’s been a heck of a lot of fun revisiting their kooky curtain-raiser through the creation of this exceptional expanded Dinked Archive Edition.
We were lucky enough to be given an early copy of the record by a trusted source who told us “I think you guys will like this” and we found ourselves instantly hooked on their twisted, oddball, electro-soul-folk-pop that took a magpie-like approach to the entirety of electronic music history. There's a warm and fuzzy, scattershot quality to the album with hints of Prince, Stevie Wonder, The Beastie Boys, Devo...a broad vision that spawns tantalising, silly, and often weirdly romantic arrangements.
They properly messed with our shopfloor categorisation though! We put the album in the Rock / Indie section, then moved them to Dance, and then back again. They defied easy categorisation then, and with each new album since, they have shaken up all previous expectations. Coming On Strong from the get go, they have been Coming On Strongerer ever since.
“Like a mellow, hip-hop-lovin' version of LCD Soundsystem…Bedroom laptop thug-pop. Electro-ironic soul music. Tongue-in-ass hip-hop” - Pitchfork
"Re-listening to 'Coming On Strong' is a pleasant reminder of a time when we were cocooned in an intricate world of music and friendship which sustained us. I have many happy memories and I like the naivety of music" - Joe Goddard
“Restlessly inventive, Hot Chip have crafted a genuinely organic, proper album, and the relaxed enthusiasm that drives this debut is absurdly infectious” Uncut
“An oddly beautiful record” Time Out
“A dazzling debut” NME
“Hot and very strong” Dazed
