sing to the moon
While mvula's undeniable vocal chops certainly recall the First Lady of R&B, nina simone (to whom she has been repeatedly compared), her "gospeldelia" sound borrows heavily from the LA school of instrumental hip-hop (Flying Lotus et al) & also at times recalls the retro-soul of Duffy or Adele.
a far classier proposition that the major label marketing machine would have us believe, to our mind she's like a the perfect meeting point between between the wonky pop of micachu & the shapes, the twinkly instrumentation of mum & the modern soulstress talents of adele. a truly beautiful, unique & quite mesmerising set of songs that will set this lady up for great things - the hype is entirely justified.
jez recommends : "A mix of the soul of Erykah Badu or Jill Scott, with ambitious arrangements akin to psychedelic masterpieces like 'SMiLe'or The Zombies 'Odyssey and Oracle'. A breath of fresh air and a bold statement."
