denton, texas’ favourite sons return with a re-jigged line-up, incorporating their quirky psychedelia, ‘70s soft-rock strains & brit-folk infusions into a newly honed sound.

the band embrace a sound as rich & symphonic as it is dynamic & kaleidoscopic, filled with urgent musical diversions, eclectic instrumentation & structures that balance both succinctness & prog-styled exploration. after the departure of former singer tim smith, the remaining members  decided to start afresh, & wrote & recorded the bulk of ‘antiphon’ in 6 harmonious months. with its ravishing, rippling textures symptomatic of ‘antiphon’s scale, ‘vale’ showed how far they’d already come. the remaining 9 tracks – the album is free-flowing in feel, concise in structure – confirm it’s very much midlake, but uncannily rebooted, & relaxed. “antiphon rewinds still further to when pink floyd’s rick wright wistfully chilled on his farfisa compact duo organ, the moody blues & beatles tripped out on the mellotron  & ringo peaked as the psychedelic drummer par excellence” 4/5 – q.
