The suavest hook-up in pop history - this surprise collaboration between the Californian veterans of theatrical pop and scotland’s finest post-punk revivalists is, truth be told, an album dominated by sparks’ indefatigable mixture of bookish irony and art-camp.

But alex kapranos and co might just be the best backing band the Mael brothers have ever had, while st Vincent producer john congleton lends a beat-driven muscularity to the duo’s wry observations and satirical barbs that’s been largely missing since 1979’s mighty, Giorgio moroder-produced  ‘no.1 in heaven’. Highlights include the poperatic disco opener ‘johnny delusional’, the gratuitously waspish ‘piss off’ and the self-explanatory ‘collaborations don’t work’. On the contrary, franz Ferdinand seem to have brought the sardonic, self-mocking best out of their iconic elders and betters. “a match made in heaven” 8/10 – uncut.
