the former 4ad stalwarts celebrate their 100th release(!) with a dizzying concept album inspired by the large hadron collider, taking in hard-riffing guitars, beatles-esque song-craft and cosmic drone/psych along the way.

Having been invited to perform at the facility at CERN in Switzerland by one of the scientists there, the band spent a year studying particle physics and then created this album. The scientist, Dr. James Beacham, was asked to "fact check for bad data, misquotes, dragons, pseudoscience and to make sure the witchcraft to physics ratio wouldn't be too embarrassing", and obligingly sent the band pages of notes, screenshots, event displays, books and videos. ‘Patterns of Light’ is the result of this exchange of information – a bewilderingly brilliant set of songs that we here have taken to our hearts. “Patterns of Light is another huge, heavy, and beautiful album that suggests this incarnation of His Name Is Alive is one of their finest.” 8/10 - allmusic
