Get on this – this Congolese collective cut their up-cycled riddims with dangerous detroit production to create a sound to kindle excitement in your ears’ belly.
Their debut EP ‘Liboso’ - meaning “forward, straight ahead” - provides a whistle-stop tour of their singular sonic universe. ‘Blvd Lumumba’, has a delicate wistful feel, set by a giant cross-shaped sculptural ‘Jesus Crisis’ harp - and when played over an 808 kick, sounds akin to homemade early house. ‘Affaire A Mbongo’ has an early 80s No Wave vibe, whilst ‘Longola Ye Kupe’ is a hypnotic number highlighting Makara Bianko's impassioned and idiosyncratic vocal, over homemade rhythmic guitar and a steady, pulsing bassline. All in all, an incredible mash-up of African styles and contemporary dance production – don’t say we didn’t tip you off, ok? ril dj khaled, biloji, death grips, james holden, karol conka.
