sub pop’s 1st ever hip hop release - & what a way to launch themselves into the genre (sub hop?)! shabazz palaces are the new project of palaceer lazaro, otherwise known as ishmael "butterfly" butler of grammy-winning new york hip hop troupe digable planets. his incredible new sonic move sees him supported by a collective (of whom there’s currently no further information) & moving far away from the jazz-rap of his previous outfit into a world of deconstructed hip hop based on minimalist / jazzy beats & vocals that run from stoned-out to confrontational. ‘black up’ sounds like spank rock processing talib kweli through anti-con’s leftfield fuzz resulting an awesome album that will appeal as much to fans of flying lotus & gonjasufi (allegedly butler's cousin) as much as to fans of any of the aforementioned or edan & clouddead. very highly recommended! “if there’s been a better album, hip-hop or not, out this year, i haven’t heard it” 9.5/10 - prefix.
