Picturesque
Sonic Cathedral
The 2nd album from the austrian duo is a post-rock-y-shoegaze-y work of great beauty & depth.
Described rather grandiosely as “divine & downright pulchritudinous” in the accompanying album notes, we’d have to agree.
A gloriously extravagant blend of Slowdive & Sigur Rós, ‘Picturesque’ hits home from the very first note of the short & sweet opener, ‘Ballerina’. But the brevity of this piece is misleading as the next track, ‘Metamorphosis’, is essentially a 12-minute suite of three movements & then the whole album builds to the fervent closer ‘The Lot’ - 11 minutes of Swans-inspired heaviness (which reminds us very much of the atmospheric, affecting slow burn of The God Machine & Sophia) – but everything is much more direct & focused.
“More is more” was definitely the credo when making this record,” says Lars Andersson (singer/guitarist). “A big inspiration were bands like Pond and the way they manage to fill their songs up with stuff to the absolute maximum. While I definitely tried to give the listener some room to breathe at certain points & while, in good old post-rock fashion, it still builds up & breaks down, it relies much more on simple melody & harmony as opposed to noisy experimentation to transport feeling.”
