I Don’t Know
Rock Action
2 albums, 2 Top 5 appearances! This time we get an album of gloriously equilibrious contrasts - from scopic ambience, textured melodics and expansive indie-rock to convincing electronic beats.
It seems we’re not ready to leave our bdrmm yet, so like reclusive teenagers, we’re going to hang out here a little longer listening to this same record on repeat. Admiring the album artwork, reading the lyrics, learning every chord progression, key change and intricate moment.
Their debut was undoubtedly indebted to the familiar shoegaze of Ride and the muscular post-rock of Mogwai - so it’s no surprise they’ve ended up on the Scots’ Rock Action record label for their sophomore - but this year’s wake up call has a gentler tone overall. You’ll be as likely to reference Radiohead as you will Slowdive. The signature effects-laden guitar washes and honeyed reverberations remain, with krauty motoriks further underpinning the fluid grooves. But now the band have introduced piano, strings, electronica, sampling and the occasional dance beat to prove they can use their abode for both snuggling under the covers and having a private boogie!
“...they have created an enigma for you to unravel. One of dark beauty and twisting longing” - The Line Of Best Fit
The transition from mid-pandemic melancholy to brighter musicality has also translated to their live show. Their crackling sonic sculptures really came to life at one of our standout instores of the year.
