Album of the Week : These Are Powers – All Aboard Future (Dead Oceans)

Single of the Week
: Disconcerts – Human Figure In Motion / Chance Remark (Structurally Sound)

Hello Everyone!
Hope you’ve all had a lovely week. We’d like to thank all of you who came down to support our new Djing stint at the Fortune of War last Thursday. We had an ace time playing our fave records. Then we got to see how the kids do it when Calum unplugged everything, booted up his laptop & ’spun’ some MP3s (bloody cheat!) & finally we got shown how to do it all properly when James brought out his own needles & slip mats & hit the decks for the last hour for some super slick scratching (bloody show-off!). Apparently we were alright, so they’re letting us back next month – we’ll keep you posted about the date. It’s nice to be involved in the relaunch of one of Brighton’s best pubs – it’s not just great in the summer beacuse you can get takeouts & sit on the beach – unlike most of Brighton’s pubs, it’s got loads of character inside & offers the best sea view window seats we know of.

Anyway, onto the new releases. This week’s top spot has been claimed by the Brooklyn / Chicago noise trio These Are Powers whose insistent beats & effects-skewed guitars have wowed us this week & are likely to appeal to fans of Gang Gang Dance or Telepathe……….we’ve potentially already got the compilation of the year lined up with the new Kompakt Pop Ambient 2009 – it’s been curated by Wolfgang Voigt / Gas which tells you the kind of quality you’ll be expecting here & it features tracks from Tim Hecker, Fun Years, Voigt himself, Klimek & more……..the Black Keys singer & guitarist Dan Auerbach has decided to go it alone for a record & delivers a fine album of outsider blues rock which isn’t too far away from the material his band produce but it’s a bit rougher & rawer than their last Dangermouse produced effort……..Swedish duo First Aid Kit might be jolly young but they look back to bygone times for their gorgeous folky ep which was originally released on the Knife’s label but is now reissued by Wichita with 2 bonus tracks – Alela Diane fans may well enjoy this one……..the mighty Prodigy return with their 5th albumĀ  – a consistent album of bangers with huge hooks – everything you’d want from them really & it comes with a free poster if you get in quick………..Mush deliver their 1st great album in ages through Sleeper – it’s a bit hip hop, a bit electronica, a bit post rock but its all very grainy, eerie & atmospheric – top stuff……..the 2nd album from Freda Hyvonen has finally been released after weeks of delay…….also inexplicably delayed for ages but now finally out, is the essential 4cd Jesus & Mary Chain boxset………..….And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead return with an ambitious record which harks back to their roots having been freed from the shackles of a major label…….Piano maestro Haushcka pops out an ep of previously unreleased material recorded during the sessions for his last album……….if you like the Make Mine Music output or minimal, organic compositions, check out the beautiful release from Northerner this week – it’s a limited 2 cd set with great remixes from the likes of Bracken, Portal, Aus, Epic45 & more……….if you’ve been a fan of Mali’s Amadou & Mariam, check out the new album from their country-mate Oumou Sangare who has delivered a “masterpiece” according to man-in-the-know Charlie Gillett…….all this & new albums from Malakai, Odawas, Sunny Day Sets Fire, New Rhodes, Jazzanova, Lars Horntveth, Boozoo Bajou, Rebotini, Matthew Shipp Trio, Blink & more. We’ve also got the BPA (Brighton Port Authority) album on vinyl, 2 weeks ahead of its cd release – it’s Norman Cook’s new collaborative venture.
