Album of the Week : Liars : Sisterworld – limited deluxe 2cd / standard cd (Mute)
Liars 5th record is perhaps their most audacious yet bringing together the many facets of their sound for an art pop record that is a thrill from top to bottom. If you can imagine a nightmarish meeting point between TV on The Radio, Beck, Suicide & The Birthday Party, that takes place on an eerie, post apocalyptic night, you’ll get a feel for this all enveloping, slighty threatening but utterly exhilarating ride.

Single of the Week
:
Gaggle : I Hear Flies (limited 7″) (Transgressive)
Debut single from the 20 strong all female choir Gaggle. Led by Deborah Coughlin, the girls unleash chaotic chants of “I’m a drunk” over dark, dubby industrial-strength beats. It’s an original, raucous, chaotic noise which is irresistible & a whole lot of fun. “the most exciting, innovative & genuinely imaginitive force at large in music right now” – NME.

Hello out there!
So it is yet another week chock-full of releases to satisfy every possible musical whim you may want to satisfy. At the top of the list is the long-time-coming new record by Liars mentioned above but that is far from all that will keep us busy this week. The Knife return with their most ambitious record to date – an opera about Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species”. A brother & sister couldn’t possibly tackle this on their own so they roped in Planning To Rock & Mt. Sims & the result is an exquisite, daring & expansive record… Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett return with the latest Gorillaz album & the great & good – Snoop Dogg, Mark E Smith, Bobby Womack etc – have once again queued up for cameos. It is a concept record about how we’re ruining the planet but the important thing is it is loaded to the gills with pop tunes!… Montreal’s Besnard Lakes return & they have served up an epic post-prog behemoth of an album. Their last was a firm favourite round these parts & this one looks to be no different… On some downtime from The Shins, frontman James Mercer has hooked up with Dangermouse & they have called themselves Broken Bells. The results aren’t a million miles from The Shins but we say if it ain’t broke….. Now I don’t know if you have heard but this little heard US alt-rock band Pavement have reformed for some shows & their label Domino has put together a “Best of” quick sharp. If you haven’t got any of this highly influential ( & just plain great) band’s records then this is the perfect entry point. Matt here has it all but still needs the “Best of” (I know, what a fanboy)…. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club return this week & it seems they have recaptured the rock & roll spirit of their debut & married it to the americana of “Howl”. It’s nice to have them back… As improbable as it may seem, Jimi Hendrix returns this week with a ‘brand new’ album, very limited single & a comprehensive reissue of the rest of his catalogue. If you don’t have any of this stuff then do yourself a favour – the man was a true one off… While we wait eagerly for the new Flying Lotus we can sate our appetite with the new record by Gonjasufi on Warp. Flying Lotus alongside Gaslamp Killer helps produce this awesome psych-bass (yeah, i made it up) oddity. If you like Fly Lo’ & Gaslamp & you are partial to a little Finders Keepers this one is for you… It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that this weeks Nigeria Special Volume 2 on Soundway is the last in the label’s series exploring 60s & 70s Nigerian goodness. The good news it is yet another impeccably compiled release & it’s sure to never venture far from my turntable for at least a few months… If that isn’t enough West African gold for your liking then be sure to pick up Afro Rock Vol. 1 on Strut. It is yet another set of pearls & as always highly recommended!… It’s been a little while since Bossa Nova royalty Bebel Gilberto has put out a record but this week is the week! It is a beguiling set that has production from Mark Ronson, the Dust Brothers & another member of Bossa royalty Daniel Jobim, amongst others. Beyond these records there are new releases from Sa Dingding, The Kissaway Trail, The Chieftains & Ry Cooder, New Young Pony Club, Duke Special,Titus Andronicus & singles from Tindersticks, Veronica Falls, Fanfarlo & oh so much more. And one last thing before we go… Now, we’re sure you have all heard about the proposed closure of BBC 6Music & the BBC Asian Network. We would like to direct you to a petition objecting to their closure here:
6 Music & Asian Network Petition. The more people that make their feelings known the better. It would be a crying shame if either of these stations had to close as both offer a unique service. Obviously from our perspective we’re sadder to see 6Music and its many great DJs, Marc Riley, Jarvis Cocker, Adam & Joe, Craig Charles etc being shown the door as they have collectively turned us on to a slew of great artists & offered great exposure to a number of our favourite undervalued acts such as Field Music. But both stations will leave a huge hole & we should all make our objections heard. Please sign the petition & if you wish to add more contact the BBC Trust via their website here & BBC Complaints here.

Right, that will probably do for another week. Have a good one.
