Now a husband & wife team (Derry Watkins & Natasha Youngs), we set up Resident in our hometown of Brighton in 2004. After years of working for the Virgin / Our Price chain (where we met) and ending up working in the head office working on endless projects, we felt we had become more detached from the music and the buzz of record shop life than we ever wanted to be. It was time for us to go it alone...

We went travelling for a while to get our heads together and start to make plans. We then spent over a year trying to raise the funds needed and find the right premises for our vision. When a site came up on Kensington Gardens, our favourite street in the North Laine (the most vibrant and independent part of Brighton), we knew it was meant to be.

We’d spent huge chunks of our respective lives in record shops. Both sides of the counter. We had also learned loads about good and bad business models in our previous roles. We set out to create the kind of record shop we would want to shop and work in.

Stimulating but not intimidating

Friendly and welcoming but not in your face

Engaging  and informative but not too geeky or overwhelming

Modern and clean but not soulless.

Initially it was just the 2 of us working crazy hours, trying to keep the dream alive. Now Resident has grown to a healthy team of 22, still working crazy hours trying to keep all our dreams alive!

Things have changed a lot over the years. The beautifully presented shop (we have a real love for design too) sells a massive and really wide selection of new releases and back catalogue on vinyl and CD, as well as tickets for most local gigs.

In 2015 we got brave and took on the lease for the shop next door and knocked the dividing wall down to create double the space, making way for a much needed expansion of our ever growing vinyl range.

Our website takes us worldwide and we go out of our way to make sure that the service is as friendly and efficient online as it is in the shop. We have a great weekly newsletter containing all the latest new releases, reissues and tickets info. We also send one weekly for the hottest presales, offering all the indie exclusives and limited editions. We hold regular instore performances and events and generally try and keep ourselves steeped in the thriving Brighton music community. At the end of the year, we publish our much anticipated favourite albums of the year in a brilliantly handy little book, known as 'The Resident Annual'. As a business, we positively ooze love for what we do!

It’s a slog to keep an independent business alive these days. The workload and costs are relentless but we can’t think of anything we’d rather do. We consider it a thrill and a privilege to work with such great product and interesting people in such an incredible city. It's a buzz we hope to ride on for a long time to come.

Finally, a testimonial from our favourite customer Mr. Nick Cave:
“You are the best fucking record shop in Britain!!!!”
