An unpretentious place of warmth, chat, humility, laughter, discovery and ultimately, sweet sweet music. Music for all ears, from all eras. No genre or generation boundaries. No judgements. Just enjoyment of everything that the culture of music and those that embrace it bring when they come together in a record shop environment.

ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION

We do our utmost to make sure Resident is accessible to all - whether you are shopping or attending an event, we want to make sure we are doing our best to provide a safe and inclusive environment. 

We mainly host standing events in the shop but we do have fold-down seats that can be provided if required. Ideally, we would ask that you notify us in advance via [email protected] but we can always deal with any requests in situ if you make us aware. 

We have 2 entrance doorways and both have ramps. One of them is narrower and has a small step leading up to it so is fine for buggies / prams but the other one is much wider and has step free access via a ramp which makes it easily accessible for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

* Please note we do not have accessible toilet facilities on site but there are various locations nearby that do if you need to be directed to somewhere.
 

HISTORY :

Resident was born of a joint dream & was opened in 2004 by Derry Watkins & Natasha Youngs in Brighton’s North Laine, their favourite part of their hometown of Brighton. The husband & wife team had spent huge chunks of their respective lives in record shops. Both sides of the counter. They set out to create the kind of record shop they would want to shop and work in.

Engaging  and informative but not too geeky or overwhelming

Modern and clean but not soulless.

Things have changed a lot over the years for us at Resident. The team has expanded from a duo into a healthy crew of 25+ fellow Residents. The physical shop doubled in size in 2015 when we took on the lease for the shop next door & knocked the dividing wall down. The stock is now predominantly vinyl instead of solely CD. The website takes us worldwide & we run a busy online service. We host an awful lot of instore & outstore events.

The core ethos of the business remains the same though – to share, champion & sell the music that keeps us motivated, excited & engaged every day.

We consider it a thrill and a privilege to work with music & interesting people all day, in such an incredible city. We positively ooze love for what we do!. 
It's a buzz we hope to ride on for a long time to come.
