tales of us
always striving for a new sound on each album, their 6th record sees them ditch the 80s-style synth pop of the last album in favour of a much lusher, 60s-inspired dream pop sound incorporating acoustic instruments & orchestral arrangements.
The aural lineage of the record is the dreamy, acoustic, David Lynch-like flavour of Goldfrapp’s opening set, 'Felt Mountain' & their defining mid-period masterwork, 'Seventh Tree'. "Electro-glam is out. In its place, hushed ambience & a sack-load of reverb pedals are in. These are delicate songs, Alison’s vocals rarely raised above a gentle whisper, but there’s an intriguing lyrical darkness there, too. Will Gregory, meanwhile, does his best Scott Walker impression, bringing the strings & creating a haunting, nocturnal atmosphere...frequently beautiful...a return to form" 7/10 - clash.
