BRIGHT EYES
Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was
Dead Oceans
returning nine years after their last album, bright eyes' tenth lp is another marvel of narrative songwriting, heart-scrunching melancholia and sweeping production.
this is an enormous record caught in the profound in-between of grief and clarity – one arm wrestling its demons, the other gripping the hand of love, in spite of it. Through deliberate, fearless experimentation in process, the trio have made the truest Bright Eyes sound: the sound of a deep bond, of a band coming home, but also a seamless continuation, like Bright Eyes never went away. “Oberst's ability to consistently write sublimely distressing melodies as well as alluringly imaginative lyrics is unrivalled, and their grand return is really what we needed this year” 8.5/10 – line of best fit.
