Few things make us happier than an artist 40 years into their career ripping up the rulebook and weaponising cutting edge sounds to exhilarating effect.

Of course, Kim has never been one to rest on her laurels - we’re not sure that she’s ever even seen a laurel, let alone rested on one. Her work in Body/Head, for example, has pushed more boundaries than a test cricket batter.

Despite this, ‘The Collective’ still shocks. It is blown out, industrial-hewn trouble that lands just as abrasively as dropping into an ice-cold plunge pool from a dizzying height. It is a breath of fresh air, even if it wallops the oxygen right out of you in the process. The former Sonic Youth mainstay utilises a raw, blown-out palette of caustic beats, distorted clangs, juddering rhythms, and her own wicked deadpan vocal delivery to devastating effect.

As a result, ‘The Collective’ hits harder than it has any right to, exemplifying Gordon’s envelope-shunting prowess, rapier-sharp tongue, and exquisite sense of taste in the process. If you’re yet to bow down to Gordon’s throne, we have some simple advice for you:

Pick it up, stick it on and watch your speakers quake like two rutting tectonic plates.

Our Ian says: "'The Collective’ is easily my album of the year for 2024. Hearing Kim blend skewed pop and dissonant chaos with trap beats and modern production really hits me in the ears. A perfect mix of tension, nostalgia for Ciccone Youth era SY, and fresh noise. It’s raw, bold, and off-kilter—exactly what I hoped for, and more. An absolute classic."

Our Julian says: "This was destined to be a personal classic of mine from the instant I first heard ‘I’m A Man’. It is superb. Unapologetic. Sharp edged, funny and doused with Kim’s seemingly limitless sharp-focused and pointed wit. A liberal dousing of rage; but never jarring. For me it holds a looking glass up to those stuck in a realm of their own toxicity. Cacophonic and distortion-laden – this is Kim at her very best. A Masterpiece."
