Those who knew and followed China Crisis didn't blink an eyelid when it was announced that Steely Dan's Walter Becker was to produce the Liverpudlian experimental pop outfit's third album.

Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon's gossamer modernism and melodic touches often came straight out of Steely Dan's playbook, in the very best way – not aping or lifting, just subtly taking elements of their influence using rhythms, repetition and melody creating a subtle sonic palette. 'Flaunt The Imperfection' is packed with sunshine pop, full of China Crisis' trademark oblique lyrics and to-die-for hooks – the hits "Black Man Ray", "You Did Cut Me" ("scouse soul" – with Careless Whisper's Steve Gregory on sax) and "King In A Catholic Style" underline this. The album also includes fan favourites such as "Bigger The Punch I'm Feeling" and the beautifully serene "Blue Sea".
