ASYLUM
Ranging from sugar-high power-pop to swooning dreamscapes and punky schoolyard spats Charlotte Aitchison’s third album is a riot of colour and noise and sneering put-downs, a world away from the goth precociousness of Lorde and the weaponised hooks of Taylor Swift.
The choruses are huge and the production dense but there’s a wittiness here that can’t help but charm, and as an antidote to an overcautious mainstream there’s much to love within the synths and drops and pithy vocals. “her long-delayed moment in the sun won’t be fleeting” – the guardian, “After years of being synonymous with the prefix ‘ft.’ Charli XCX has found her voice” 4/5 – diy, “an uncompromising, ferocious talent, self-assured and empowered and incredibly versatile” 7.6/10 - pitchfork
