there are few songwriters that can coax so much out of so little as mitski – ‘puberty 2’ is written as a love letter to ennui, despair and heartbreak, all laid over jangling breeders-y rock noir.

nowhere is her poetry and songwriting more devastating and effective than on ‘happy’, in which the emotion has manifested physically, showing it to be careless, irresponsible and haunting, resulting in a horrible comedown full of regret and emotional exhaustion. it’s hard to think of a musician that captures the nadir of emotion quite like mitski, or someone who can make their guitar laden melodrama sound quite this relatable and overwhelming. fans of perfume genius, leonard cohen and throwing muses take note. “as a landmark of histrionic DIY music, it deserves to be part of something bigger than itself." - 9/10, album of the week - spin
