Nick Cave & Warren Ellis

mars (original soundtrack)

These two masters of the richly textured film score turn their gaze heavenward to deliver music for national geographic’s six-part sci-fi series, ‘mars’.

Cave and Ellis are renowned for deeply evocative film music that evokes a sense of wilderness, such as their dramatic work on modern western ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’, or with their haunting score for ‘the road’. For the different kind of wild landscapes of space, cave and ellis employ a more cosmic sound palette of tones, drones and electronic sound design, creating a stunningly detailed sound world. This is subtle, intimate music at times, which rewards attentive listening - or even better blasting through the biggest speakers you can possibly find to appreciate the both the nuance and grand sweep of this transcendent work. Recommended for those who fell for the bad seed’s atmospheric production on ‘skeleton tree’, modern kosmische explorers such as tim hecker and steve hauschildt, and modern classical contemporaries like Jóhann Jóhannsson.
