Five years on from their surprise collaborative EP, 2023 finally brought us an equally unexpected full album that exceeded even our highest hopes.

‘the record’ feels new and unlike anything else, yet doesn’t drastically veer from the playbook to achieve it  The power of these 12 tracks comes from 3 distinct songwriting voices creating a nebulous and uniquely distinctive sound that borrows from Judee Sill, Nick Drake and Wilco, and in doing so, creates a consciously modern songwriting language that matches their 21st century poetic lyrics.

We’ve loved seeing ‘the record’ rise to this level of reverence. It’s still finding new adoring ears each time we play it in the shop - regardless of age, gender or usual musical persuasion. It’s a rare joy to find an album that bridges disparate tastes and provides common ground for many we may not have imagined to be concordant.

Ultimately, the trio have managed to do much more than find a common tongue between themselves - boygenius no longer feels like a supergroup, but the group. Does it surpass their solo works? That’s subjective, but the influence of this album already looks like it’ll go far beyond any of their individual circles. A uniting and wonderful achievement.
